Yoga in Cabuya and Montezuma:classes and retreats
Written by Cabuya CR EditorsChecked 4 min read

In short Most yoga in Cabuya happens on retreats: The Sanctuary at Two Rivers hosts jungle retreats, and lodges such as Wild Sun and Cabuya Lodge have yoga decks used by guests and retreat groups. For a drop-in class, the nearest regular public schedule we could confirm is at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort in Montezuma, 15 to 20 minutes away.
The southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula has drawn yoga teachers and retreat groups for years, for the same reasons other visitors come: quiet, forest, ocean and very little traffic. In Cabuya itself, though, yoga is mostly something that happens on retreats and at lodges, not in a studio on the main road. Here's where to practice, and how to find a class if you're just passing through.
Retreats in Cabuya
The Sanctuary at Two Rivers
The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is a jungle retreat center on about 40 acres where the Río Lajas and Río Cacao meet, outside Cabuya village. You reach it by a short nature walk of about 15 minutes from the arrival point. It has open-air yoga spaces and a screened yoga pavilion, jungle lofts and studio houses for roughly 18 to 22 guests, a pool and spa, and plant-based meals. There are two waterfalls with swimming pools on the property, and it runs on solar power.
It works as a venue for retreats and group bookings rather than an ordinary hotel, so you'll usually come on a retreat led by a visiting teacher or rent it for your own group. Its website lists upcoming retreats into late 2026. A real-estate listing has offered the land for sale, so check the center's own site for current plans before booking far ahead.
Cabuya Lodge
Cabuya Lodge, about 200 m west of the village school, is a small property on 2 acres of jungle, a few minutes' walk from the beach. It has cabins and a house around a tiered pool, plus a covered open-air yoga deck, and it's used as a venue by retreat organizers, with retreats listed for late 2026. We couldn't find an official website, so book through the retreat organizer.
Lodges with yoga decks
Wild Sun Rescue Center has a jungle lodge with an infinity pool and a yoga deck, and stays help fund the wildlife rescue. We couldn't confirm public classes there; it's best thought of as a quiet place to practice on your own or with a group. Ask when you book.
If you're bringing a mat and practicing on your own, a quiet base like Villas Cabuya, steps from the beach, works well. See where to stay in Cabuya for more options.
Drop-in classes in Montezuma
Ylang Ylang Beach Resort
The most reliable public schedule we found nearby is at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort on the beach north of Montezuma village, about 15 to 20 minutes' drive from Cabuya. The resort says its classes are open to the public, not just guests. Its published schedule shows a daily class at 8 am, extra classes at 10 am on Wednesdays and Saturdays and at 4 pm on Sundays, each about 90 minutes long. It posts current times on its yoga studio's Facebook page, so check there before making the trip.
Montezuma Yoga
Montezuma Yoga, a long-running name in town, no longer runs as a regular studio. Its founder now teaches occasional pop-up classes and retreats, so look for announcements locally.
Retreats and teacher training in Montezuma
Anamaya Resort
Anamaya Resort sits on the hill above Montezuma, with an open-air yoga space looking out over the Pacific. It runs wellness and yoga retreats, hosts retreats led by visiting teachers, and offers 200-hour yoga teacher training. See anamaya.com for its program dates.
Other teacher trainings
Montezuma attracts other trainings too. For example, Devaya Yoga lists a 200-hour teacher training in Montezuma from 20 October to 14 November 2026. Trainings like these are residential courses, not drop-in classes. Retreat directories are the easiest way to see what's on during your dates.
Tips for practicing here
- Go early. Mornings are cooler, and in the green season rain usually comes in the afternoon.
- Bring your own mat if you plan to practice outside classes, and a light towel for the humidity.
- Expect wildlife. Howler monkeys, birds and insects are part of the soundtrack on jungle decks.
- Confirm times. Schedules in small towns change with the seasons and with teachers' travel.
- Pair it with the reserve. A morning class and an afternoon at Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve or the island cemetery walk makes for a balanced day.
